Richard Serra's Joe

Frosting Sculptures thumbnail

Richard Serra's Joe stands in the courtyard of the Pulitzer Foundation of the Arts in St. Louis, Missouri. Joe is a twenty-five ton torqued spiral, into which the viewer can walk. The space is continuously transformed as the walls of the sculpture stand at unusual angles. Over a period of six months, I visited and photographed the sculpture countless times and under drastically different weather conditions. My intention was to isolate the beauty I saw in the form of the sculpture as it stood in relation to the ever-changing sky, and translate the fleeting beauty I saw into a permanent image. The result is a series of images that explore basic visual ideas including line, shape, and color - while simultaneously paying tribute to Serra's monumental work.

Each image is a 12 x 18 inch C-print, and is limited to an edition of twenty-five.
